Step by Step... Literally! The Ultimate Guide to Skincare Layering

After 27 years of "mixing" ingredients and testing formulas, I’ve learned one thing for sure: The order of application is just as important as the quality of the ingredients themselves.

Think of your skin as a sponge. If that sponge is covered in dust or already "soaked" in oil, any precious elixir you pour on top will simply slide off and go to waste. So, let’s put things in order to make sure every penny you spend actually pays off!

The Golden Rule: From Thinnest to Thickest

If you remember nothing else, remember this: Always start with the products that feel like water and finish with those that are richer and creamier.

1. Cleansing: The Blank Canvas There’s no negotiating here. Morning and night, we start with a good cleanser. If the skin isn’t perfectly clear of pollutants, sebum, or makeup, the active ingredients in the next steps will stay on the surface and... throw a party with the bacteria.

2. Toner: The Pre-Game Toner isn’t just "scented water." It’s the product that restores your skin’s pH and prepares it to "drink up" everything that follows. Think of it like lightly dampening a dry sponge so it can better absorb the detergent later.

3. Serum: The Star of the Show This is where the "heavy hitters" come in. Serums have a micro-molecular structure designed to penetrate deep. This is the stage for high concentrations—like my favorite 9% Niacinamide or that organic elixir we were talking about. Serum always goes under your cream. If you put it on top, the cream will block its path, and it will never reach its destination.

4. Eye Cream: Targeted Care The eye area is thinner and more sensitive. Apply a small amount (about the size of a grain of rice) by tapping gently before your face cream, to ensure this delicate area gets exactly what it needs.

5. Moisturizer: The Seal Your cream acts as your shield. Its job is to seal the moisture and the serum inside the skin while creating a protective film. Without moisturizer, your serum might evaporate before it even gets a chance to work.

6. Sunscreen: The Guardian Angel (AM only!) Sunscreen is always—and I mean always—the final step of your morning routine. Period. It goes over your cream to reflect radiation. If you put anything on top of it (except makeup), you "break" the seal and leave yourself unprotected.
